Ellen Steele

Ellen Steele is a theatre maker, performer, and director based in Adelaide, South Australia. She has toured extensively throughout Australia, Asia, and North America with companies including Windmill Theatre Company, State Theatre Company of South Australia, Vitalstatistix, Slingsby, Belvoir, The Border Project, and Patch Theatre.

As an independent artist, Ellen has created and developed work with Aphids, TerryandTheCuz, Handspring Puppet Company, Larissa McGowan, Spilt Second, Zoe Meagher (Next Wave Festival), Arlo Mountford, Misery Children, and Sanctum Theatre. From 2019–2020 she was the recipient of an Arts SA Fellowship, researching cross-cultural theatre practices in Beijing and Adelaide while developing The Friendly Games.

Ellen is also a founding member of isthisyours?, an award-winning all-female collective dedicated to creating original and unconventional performance. Since 2007, the group has produced five full-scale works, toured nationally, and premiered acclaimed productions including The Club, Angelique, and The Awkward Years. Their latest work, The Dog Show, is currently in development.

Most recently, Ellen’s new work See You at the Dance has been supported by Vitalstatistix and Brink Productions. She will also appear in the upcoming Australian feature film It’s All Going Very Well No Problems At All (written and directed by Tilda Cobham-Hervey), currently in pre-production ahead of its 2026 release.
